Jackson, Mich. (WKHM) — The Leoni Township Board of Trustees held their meeting on Tuesday in front of a full house for their decision on the measure of rezoning the Pine Hollow Golf Course land to heavy industrial.
Following public comment featuring resident pushback on the motion, as has been the case since November, the board unanimously voted against it 0-6.
During the public comment, Interstate Capital CEO Greg Diloné Jr. asked the board to table the vote so the company could meet with the board before a final decision took place.
Interstate Capital, who would have bought the land had the rezoning been approved, also provided a rezoning request packet at the meeting in which the company claimed they would not consider a data center for future use.
Citizens from the township have cited concerns about potential environmental, noise, and health risk issues associated with having heavy industrial land close to residential areas as to why they did not want the rezoning to be approved.
Leoni Township resident Ed Kerley told WKHM that he is happy with the Board’s ultimate decision to not pass the motion.
Kerley said that this is an example of local residents showing up in numbers to make a difference and make their voices heard to local government.
Also in attendance at the meeting were State Representative Kathy Schmaltz and a representative for State Senator Sue Shink.
